Tuesday Talk with Dr. Dain - November 24, 2020

Greetings Pirate Nation!

Happy Tuesday!  This morning I woke up thinking about my weekly “Tuesday Talk” and the sentiment I hoped to be able to express.   I immediately thought of those greeting cards, signs and T-shirts that say “Thankful, Grateful, Blessed.” And then I started thinking…what IS the difference between “thankful” and “grateful”?  I did a little bit of research and this is what I learned:

Grateful and thankful are expressions or sentiments of appreciation.  The two terms are very close in meaning, and as they are synonyms of each other, they share similar attributes.  However, there is a difference in the manner in which they are used. Although they appear to offer the same concept, the essence of being grateful goes deeper than being thankful.

The close contact between the two words is expressed in a quote from Swiss writer and philosopher Henri Frederic Amiel who wrote:

Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude.

Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness

Thankfulness may consist merely of words.

Gratitude is shown in acts.

As we enter this Thanksgiving season, please allow me to take just a moment and tell you how incredibly grateful I am to have the opportunity to serve the Piper community.  This community is so incredibly kind, gracious, welcoming, and focused on children.  You are intelligent, inquisitive, and humorous!  Thank you for being so amazing. I am so completely thankful to work with your children, the Piper Staff and the greater Piper community!  Please stay safe this holiday season!

@PiperCreek (Piper Creek Elementary)

@PiperElementary (Piper Prairie Elementary)

It will be critically important that families continue with the mitigation efforts mentioned above, as we approach this Thanksgiving holiday break and other social gatherings. Otherwise, community transmission levels could impact our ability to staff schools. Again, students and staff have been doing an excellent job of keeping schools safe to remain open, but they can’t do that by themselves. Staffing is a critical issue, and we need the entire community’s help in keeping schools open.

Proud to be a Pirate,

Dr. Jessica Dain
