Tuesday Talk with Dr. Dain - September 22, 2020

Good Evening Me Hearties!  We are close to being back in school for two weeks and it is exciting to see students, teachers, and parents getting their sea legs.  I am so proud of our community—from teachers learning brand-new instructional technology, to students wearing their masks, to parents learning about Canvas—everyone has embraced that we are in the middle of CHANGE—and through grace and compassion and patience—we can do hard things.

Piper Educational Foundation

From supporting goody bags for teachers to purchasing $50,000 worth of technology for the district, our Piper Educational Foundation is DEFINITELY a partnership that allows our school district to thrive! The PEF has a current goal of doubling to tripling their followers on Facebook in order to stay in close contact with our public and our alumni.  Their simple ask:  please go to Facebook and “like” the Piper Educational Foundation.  It is quick and easy and will allow our foundation to better support the district and our students! In addition, check out their website at for ways to get involved and support their important work!

Piper Portrait of a Graduate

Every school system is unique, but they are connected by a shared aspiration: that all students have an educational experience preparing them to be effective lifelong learners and contributors.

Now more than ever, that experience must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but it must also be more intentional about fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and other 21st century skills our young people need to thrive in this complex, rapidly changing world.

Many school systems across the country have engaged their larger community in developing a Portrait of a Graduate, a collective vision that articulates the community’s aspirations for all students.

Locally developed, but globally positioned, the Portrait of a Graduate serves as a North Star for system transformation. Providing strategic direction for the redesign of the overall educational experience for students, this collective vision reinvigorates and re-engages students, teachers, and community stakeholders.

I am extremely excited for our community to begin this journey in creating the Piper Portrait of a Graduate.  As such, I would like to invite parents and community members (including the Greater Kansas City Metro Area) to help define what skills our students need prior to leaving us as Piper High School Graduates.

I am currently working on scheduling this meeting—it will be an evening meeting that ensures social distancing measures can take place.  I am still working on the date and format, but wanted to go ahead and start building our community committee.

If you are interested in joining this work AND/OR you know someone who needs to be involved in this work, please complete the link below and I will be in touch soon with next steps!

COVID-19 Family Reminders

Just a quick reminder that if in the unfortunate case a parent exhibits COVID-19 symptoms and are waiting test results, children in the same home need to be quarantined/excluded from school until the parent’s test results are received.  This type of vigilant attention to the health and well-being of others keeps our school communities safe!  Thank you for your assistance.
