Tuesday Talk with Dr. Dain - August 18, 2020
Ahoy Pirate Family!
As we are gearing up to start school, the devil is in the details! The teachers, support staff, and administrators have all reported back to work and are diligently preparing for the beginning of the school year. With that, you will find several items that are “recycled” from last week, but need to ensure that parents have read the information and understand the upcoming deadlines. These deadlines are of course to ensure that we have everything ready and in place to begin the new school year!
Fall Activities Update
I will begin this update with a recap of last night’s Special Board of Education Meeting. Last night the BOE had a special board meeting to seek legal counsel as it relates to the Wyandotte County Health Department’s Executive Order regarding fall activities. After the opportunity to meet with legal counsel, the Board decided to move forward in scheduling another Special Board of Education Meeting this Thursday night at 6:30 PM at Piper High School in the Auditorium to hear from parents, coaches, and administrators regarding their feedback on fall activities. Click here for more information for details about the meeting.
Now that we have finalized the Hybrid Learning Model, we now need a final count from parents regarding which families will be utilizing the school bus. This information is CRITICAL for us as our routes may look a little differently due to the middle school and high school half day sessions. We will be providing midday routes for middle and high school students. Please complete the survey if you are planning to utilize the bus this year; additionally, please tell your neighbor and friends to complete the link as well. Click here to complete the survey. THIS INFORMATION NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED BY THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 21st!
Student 1:1 Device Pick Up (Next Week: August 24-28th)
To help parents with remote learning as well as to provide a dedicated and always available device to our students, Piper School District will be issuing out a device to each of its enrolled students. Devices will be handed out the week of August 24th. In order to pick up devices, families must have completed the enrollment process along with knowing/bringing their district-issued Student Identification Number. Please click here for directions and a map.
Student Supply List
Over the last week we have started fielding questions regarding the 2020-2021 supply list, specifically as it relates to remote learners. We do not believe there will be any difference in the supplies needed for onsite or remote learners. However, one new addition to the supply list due to our new 1:1 student devices, is the need for students to have a set of headphones in which they can participate in individualized learning activities in the classroom. These headphones should NOT be headphones of significant value (i.e. Apple AirPods, Beats by Dr. Dre etc.) but rather a simple pair of headphones that can easily be replaced if lost. Please click here for the full school supply list.
It has been so fun having our staff back on campus! For many, it has been the first time they have been in their classrooms since March. I know I speak for all of them when I saw we cannot wait to see our students very soon.
Proud to be a Pirate,
Dr. Jessica Dain
