Instructions for Connecting Your Device to PiperWireless Network

  • When connecting your device to the District's wireless network, please follow the instructions below for your device.  If you require assistance with connecting, you may reach out to the admin staff in your building, or email me directly and I will help you get set up.

     

    Windows 8/10 Windows 7 Apple PC Windows Mobile Android Mobile Chromebook Apple Mobile

     


    Windows 8/10 PC:

    1. In the Windows system tray, click on your wireless adaptor icon.
    2. Click on the PiperWireless network.
    3. You will be asked to sign in:
      • Use your existing domain username and password
    4. Once you have successfully authenticated to the wireless network, you need to install the SSL certificate for Smoothwall:
      1. Click this link to download the certificate for Smoothwall.
      2. Accept the defaults for the certificate.
        • Without this certificate, you will not have access to secured websites

     


    Windows 7 PC:

    1. In the Windows system tray, click on your wireless adaptor icon.
    2. Click on the PiperWireless network.
    3.  You will be asked to sign in:
      • Use your existing domain username and password
    4. Your initial connection may not work.  If it does not, please proceed to step 5, otherwise, skip to step 15.
    5. Open Control Panel, then Network and Sharing Center.
    6. Click the link on the left labeled "Manage Wireless Network".
    7. Right-click on PiperWireless, choose Properties.
    8. Click the Security tab.
    9. Next to "Choose a network authentication method", click the Settings button.
    10. UNcheck the top box labeled "Validate server certificate".
    11. Next to "Select Authentication Method", click the Configure button.
    12. UNcheck the option "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password".
    13. Click the OK button on all open windows.
    14. Go back to step 1 above and try connecting again.
      • If you still cannot get connected, please email me.
    15. Once you have successfully authenticated to the wireless network, you need to install the SSL certificate for Smoothwall:
      1. Click this link to download the certificate for Smoothwall.
      2. Accept the defaults for the certificate.
        • Without this certificate, you will not have access to secured websites

     


    Apple PC:

    1. At the top of the screen, click on your wireless adaptor icon.
    2. Click on the PiperWireless network.
    3. You will be asked to sign in:
      • Use your existing domain username and password.
    4. Once you have successfully authenticated to the wireless network, you need to install the SSL certificate for Smoothwall:
      1. Click this link to download the certificate for Smoothwall.
      2. Open your downloads folder and double-click on the "Guardian CA Cert" certificate to install it to your keychain.
      3. When asked for the location to store the certificate, choose "Local".
      4. If asked what the certificate is to be used for, choose "Logins".
      5. Now, while still in Keychain, look for the "smoothwall.usd203.local" certificate in Local.
      6. Double-click on the certificate to open it.
      7. Expand the Trust section.
      8. Change the top option "When using this certificate" to the following setting:  Always Trust
      9. Close Keychain
        • Without this certificate, you will not have access to secured websites.

     


    Windows Mobile Device:

     


    Android Mobile Device (rough instructions):

    1. Open your Settings, then WiFi
    2. Tap on PiperWireless
    3. Select the following options:
      • PEAP
      • MsCHAPv2
      • Do Not Inspect
    4. Enter your computer username as the Identity
    5. Enter your computer password

     


    Google Chromebook:

    1. Click on the "Ash Tray" area on the bottom-right of the screen.
    2. Click where it says "No network" to bring up the list of available wireless networks.
    3. Click on the network labeled PiperWireless.
    4. For EAP Method, choose:  PEAP
    5. For Phase 2 Authentication, choose:  Automatic
    6. For Server CA Certificate, choose:  Do Not Check
    7. For Identity, enter your domain username.
    8. For Password, enter your domain password.
    9. Once you have successfully authenticated to the wireless network, you need to install the SSL certificate for Smoothwall:
      1. Click this link to download the certificate for Smoothwall.
      2. Click the Menu icon on the top-right of the Chrome browser window, choose Settings.
      3. Scroll down and click the link labeled "Show advanced settings...".
      4. Scroll down to the section "HTTP/SSL", then click the "Manage Certificates" button.
      5. Click the Authorities tab, then the Import button.
      6. Choose the "Guardian CA Cert" certificate located in your downloads or drive folder, then click Open.
        • The location depends on where you have set downloads within Chrome.
      7. When asked to edit the trust settings, check the box labeled "Trust this certificate for identifying websites".
        • If you are not automatically asked this, scroll down the list of certificates until you find the one for Smoothwall, click on it then click the Edit button.
      8. You can now click the Done button and exit out of Settings.
        • Without this certificate, you will not have access to secured websites.

     


    Apple Mobile Device:

    1. From the Home Screen, tap the Settings icon
    2. Tap the Wi-Fi icon .
    3. Tap on the PiperWireless network.
    4. You will be asked to sign in:
      • Use your existing domain username and password.
    5. Click Trust for the "Piper-ClearPass" certificate.
      • You cannot join the wireless without trusting this certificate.
    6. Once you have successfully authenticated to the website, you need to install the SSL certificate for Smoothwall:
      1. Click this link to download the certificate for Smoothwall.
      2. Click Install for the "smoothwall.usd203.local" certificate.
      3. Click Install again to approve adding the certificate to your root trusted certificate list.
      4. Click Install a final time at the bottom of the screen.
      5. Click Done to exit out of certificate install.
